SUBSAFE
The USS Thresher was lost with all-hands on April 10, 1963 – 60 years ago – the first nuclear submarine to be lost at sea. While a tragedy in so many respects the sinking gave rise to the rigorous submarine safety program known as SUBSAFE. The program has become a model for safety programs worldwide.
The cause of the sinking has never been established to the satisfaction of all. The ship was doing initial post-overhaul deep-dive trials in contact with a submarine rescue ship, USS SKYLARK, on the surface. As she neared her test depth, she reported some minor problems and then all communications were lost. Search and rescue vessels at the time were unable to locate the lost submarine. Thresher was found more than a year later, 8,400 below the surface.
Our program on April 13 will feature Captain Chris Bohner, Commander of Submarine Base Kings Bay and career submariner, discussing the history of Thresher, her loss, and, most important, the resulting SUBSAFE program. SUBSAFE now encompasses every aspect of a vessel’s design, materials, fabrication, testing, training and certification. It was the safety standard used when analyzing the loss of the Space Shuttles Challenger and Columbia.
