The Fall Season for the Camden-Kings Bay Navy League is Underway!!
Join us for a very special “Peek Behind the Kings Bay Curtain” with Captain Mark Yates, Commanding Officer, Trident Refit Facility.
Our September dinner meeting will be on the second Thursday (as usual), September 14, at the Osprey Cove Clubhouse. Social hour and Check-In begin at 5:30, dinner at 6:30. $30 per person. The Trident Refit Facility (TRF) includes an industrial area, waterfront support complex, Defensive Ordinance Support Facility, Magnetic Silencing Facility and the largest covered drydock in the Northern Hemisphere. Approximately 1,700 military and civilian men and women support the Trident boats at Kings Bay, United Kingdom submarines, other class submarines, and regional maintenance customers.

That’s what the TRF is all about. The six Ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) assigned to Kings Bay each have two crews, Blue and Gold. According to the Navy web site, the average sequence for any SSBN is for the boat and Blue crew to deploy on patrol for, on average, 77 days, then return to Kings Bay for maintenance and turnover to the Gold Crew taking 35 days – and repeat that cycle every 77/35 days. The schedule is relentless. Whatever needs to be done during a maintenance period, the TRF has to get it done. For the two Guided Missile submarines, SSGN, the TRF goes to where the boat is since the Florida and Georgia are often away from Kings Bay for two years.
If this sounds like a 24/7/365 juggling test, it is. And the head juggler is the right person for the job. Captain Yates is a qualified Submariner and he’s also a qualified Surface Warfare Officer. He’s served on three attack subs, two boomers, and three aircraft carriers. He took command of TRF in March, 2022. Prior to Kings Bay he was Senior Inspector at the Navy’s Board of Inspection and Survey.
This will be a very interesting and animated presentation, a unique look at a piece of the Kings Bay mission that not many get to hear about.
